Neighborhood Tree Planting
Pilsen is one of the neighborhoods in Chicago with the least trees and one of the hottest in the summer months. It also has significant levels of heavy metals in the air and ground. Heavy metals affect everyone, especially the elderly, pregnant women, and children. Trees can filter the air, detox soil, reduce flooding, and cool the air. Women for Green Spaces is committed to submitting addresses on sidewalks for the city to plant trees between Pilsen, Little Village, and Back of the Yards.
After receiving a grant from the Chicago Tree Initiative, volunteers have planted trees on sidewalks, community gardens, and around schools. Ongoing workshops and information sessions for students and community members have been available, discussing the importance of trees and the adequate way to maintain them. The goal is for MEV to have submitted 100 addresses for trees.
