Community and School Gardens

Women for Green Spaces encourages the preservation and diversity of pollinators by having native plants in gardens. Having diverse types of native plants in a garden establishes a healthy ecosystem where bees, butterflies, birds, and other species of pollinators can have a symbiotic relationship that allows a healthy food chain, biodiversity, and plant reproduction. These community and school gardens with native plants have raised awareness among Pilsen residents of their importance.

Students and parents at Orozco Community Academy have been actively involved since 2022 in the planting and maintaining the schools’ surrounding green areas. Community volunteers have also been participating in preserving community gardens and surrounding areas. Volunteers continue to be motivated to better the community by the progress and results they have seen in the gardens.
